Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the teeth made of and can they be resharpened?
The teeth have a carbide tip soldered to a heat treated base - they can be resharpened 4 to 8 times depending on damage from hitting rocks or hard objects.

2 . How many stumps can I grind with a set of teeth?
Depending on the size of the stumps and amount of rocks you hit will determine the amount of stumps you can grind. It is not uncommon to grind 50 - 10" diameter or 200 - 3" diameter ( Christmas tree size ) stumps per set.

3. How do I sharpen the teeth?
We have two options - we sell a green wheel that mounts to a 6" bench grinder that allows you to sharpen your teeth at your shop or home. The second option we sell is a 4" diamond wheel that goes on a 4" or 4.5" disc grinder which allows you to sharpen the teeth on the stump cutter at the worksite without taking the teeth off the machine saving time.

4. What is the difference between regular and rock teeth?
The regular teeth are fastest cutting and work best in hard woods and green pine. Rock teeth work best in areas where there are lots of rocks or hard objects. When you hit a hard object they will have the tendency to dull insted of chip and crack like the regular teeth do when you hit something hard. The rock teeth also work well in soft fiberous woods such as cottonwood or palm trees.

5. How often do I change the belt?
Once a year is the recomended period but many people get two years.

6. Do I need the transport wheel set?
They are useful if you have to go across paved or hard surfaces or do shallow trenching. For stump grinding in areas where there is a lawn or earth surface you can roll the cutter head on the ground and it won't hurt the cutting teeth. The wheel set also makes on-machine sharpening and changing teeth much more convenient.

7. Can I grind stumps with the transport wheel set on the leg?
No - We do not want you to grind stumps with the wheels attached to the leg, it only takes a quick turn of a wrench to take the wheels off the leg.

8. What is the difference in powerheads?
The Stihl TS760 is a 6.5 HP motor that allows you to use our machine to cut stumps, do trenches, clear brush, and by adding the cutoff arm you can cut concrete or steel rebar. The Husqvarna 3120XP is 9 HP and will cut stumps, do trenches, clear brush, and saw trees by putting a bar and chain on it. Both powerheads are dependable and have been on the market for over 20 years.

9. Why do you make 2 leg styles?
The steel leg is our original design, used for stump cutting and trenching. The Aluminum leg is 14 pounds lighter and is our recommended choice for stump cutting and brushing. The steel leg has rebuildable pivot joints and is the more durable of the two legs. The aluminum leg will last a long time if used with reasonable care. It is twice as easy to use when stump cutting than the steel leg. The steel leg is the best choice if trenching is the primary use of the machine.

10. What is the shipping cost of the machine?
Shipping rates fluctuate and we always aim to get your machinery to you as economically as possible. Please call for the best current rates.
